This commercial was a really great opportunity to get out in our local surroundings and show the current residents just how beautiful it all is with the right light, soundtrack and lenses. Zeiss Primes. Those are the right ones. And a really nice 24-70mm Canon L series lens.

All of the locations were shot in Central Oregon. Some of the highlights include Smith Rock, Mt. Bachelor, Tumalo Falls, and the Lava Lands. You wouldn't believe how varied the scenery is in a 20 mile radius around Bend.

The commercial was shot in collaboration with the much lauded Brand Navigation. They wrote a nice blog post about it here.<img src="http://payload35.cargocollective.com/1/0/580/3009521/Credits_Header.png" width="212" height="50" width_o="212" height_o="50" src_o="http://payload35.cargocollective.com/1/0/580/3009521/Credits_Header_o.png" data-mid="15336307" border="0" align="left"/>

This project was the second in a series for BendBroadband. The gorgeous scenery of Central Oregon (and Mt. Bachelor in particular) made this a bit of a favorite project; no matte paintings needed.

They always say that the most challenging subjects to film are kids and dogs; here we had plenty of both. However, I think we beat the odds with some really great kids, as well as a super-solid avalanche dog (Wyatt) that trudged all over the mountain for 2 full days. He even rode the lift with ease.

This sort of shoot really proved the power of HDSLR shooting. We packed light, had only a couple pieces of modification equipment, and shot all day. Our 7Ds held up in all kinds of wind, weather, and lighting situations beautifully.

Big loads of thanks go to the BendBroadband for being an awesome client, and also to Mt. Bachelor for accommodating our cast and crew for 2 days.

This was a short film we directed as a promo for the 2012 Justice Conference. The conference is an annual 2-day conference focused on bringing multinational issues such as human-trafficking, malnutrition, race relations, and many other issues to light.

Our aim with this video was to show people of diverse backgrounds and walks of life coming together with the common goal of creating something bigger than themselves: justice and right living with their fellow human beings.

The production took place across the entire state of Oregon, and culminated with scenes shot in downtown Portland. Almost all the cast and crew worked entirely without pay; which is to say, it was definitely a passion project for many.

The score was composed by Tony Anderson, who is definitely someone we hope to work with again. Too bad there are so many big talents that live so far away.

The Justice Conference is an annual 2-day conference focused on bringing multinational issues such as human-trafficking, malnutrition, race relations, and many other issues to light. This short film was created to be shown on the opening night of the conference itself.

The piece was shot on a RED Epic, in cooperation with Fabric Creative in Vancouver, Canada. Many of the shots were shot at unique framerates, in order to create different emphasis on pieces of the action. The lenses we shot it with were Sony PL mount primes - 35, 50 and 85mm.

The score was created by the very talented Ben Larson, and sound design completed by David Todd Murray. We really hope to work with those guys again soon.

We also had the privilege of working with Denver Riddle, a very experienced and multi-talented colorist, who also creates tutorials and resources for the film industry at large. His knowledge of the DaVinci Resolve capabilities really sped up our post-production process.

Loveworks is all about inspiring and empowering young people to change their world. Their goal is to leverage the creativity and compassion of a privileged generation for the good of their fellow humans who are in desperate need around the world. This short animation aims to explain what they do, why they do it, and why you want to be a part of it.

The entire animation was created from a script by Matthew Smith, which really simplified the concepts that we needed to convey. From there, we recorded the script with the very talented Micah Bournes.

After we had the VO and a music track finalized, the animation began in earnest. Loveworks already had a great brand, so the art was created to seamlessly fit into their current identity.

This kind of project is extremely rewarding; not only because animation is fun (and everyone loves bright colors), but because it becomes a powerful tool for an organization that has a great purpose: to make our world a better place.

World Relief is a multinational relief and development organization. They recently completed a rebranding with the excellent Brand Navigation, and we were hired to create this video as an introduction to the new brand.

It was a great opportunity to get into a studio environment, and create a commercial, branding heavy piece. This was also the first video we filmed with our Canon 1D Mk IV. What a great piece of equipment. We also used our Zeiss prime lenses. Such great glass.

Another first for this project was the creation of custom music to accompany the video. Enter Ben Larson, a 25 year old prodigy who wrote, scored, and produced the entire musical backdrop to our video. Impressive stuff, and we hope to work with him more.

Ann Mara (the woman in the video) has a wonderful presence, and it was a lot of fun to work with her. Matt Smith helped out with direction and writing. The B-Roll in Africa and India was generously donated by Benjamin Edwards and Mark Ellis.

This short documentary was created to give a voice to the over 1,000 nameless, homeless youth in Bend, Oregon. The stories in this videos are real, and the issues have never been more pertinent as winter approaches.

We worked with Icon City (a local organization striving to meet the needs of these youth) to find kids who were willing to talk about what it's like to be homeless. This video is for their use to try and raise funds to provide blankets, showers, food, shelter and the basic necessities to survive.

As filmmakers, it was difficult to maintain our composure as these kids spilled their guts, laying out issues they face every day that we can only imagine. Their honesty and humility was completely disarming.

We had the opportunity to work with Brandon Hill (a photographer from Kansas City) while shooting the interviews. His expertise in lighting and composition really added to the presentation. And he's a great guy to boot! Check out his photography here.

Our client approached us with a general idea, and let us run with it. It's refreshing to work with people who trust us as filmmakers, and want the end goal to be something unexpected and wonderful. A great place to start.

We live in a society obsessed with stuff; clothes, food, image, technology. It's everywhere. The saturation is so complete that it's almost uncomfortable for many of us to just sit and be quiet. How do you portray this issue in film?

After much brainstorming, we decided to focus on mass media's influence on our personal image/wants/desires. This would enable us to tell the story of man's worry of clothes, food, possessions, images through the lens of our current culture. A conceptual approach was the best way to add commentary to the text, and not drown it out with a story we wanted to tell.

A conceptual film is all about it's tone. You have to establish an emotional landscape that draws people in. It becomes particularly challenging when you don't have actors reading lines, so the music, color, and voiceover have to do the heavy lifting.

The entire project was shot at night, and completed in just two nights. Since we couldn't find a suitable location, we simply built the set ourselves in Nate's garage. This worked great, as we were able to make the set look exactly how we wanted, and could even move the walls for the dolly shots.

This film has one message: it's ok to ask questions. A society that questions nothing cannot be honest with itself. Asking questions leads not to more confusion, but deeper understanding.

Matt Smith (one of the writers we work with) created an excellent voiceover script that really drove these themes home. We decided a great way to enhance the vocal FX would be with motion graphics that complemented the text visually. It's also a great way to extend the branding throughout the piece.

A unique challenge was getting an urban feel in Bend. While fairly large (about 100,000), Bend lacks the dense infrastructure of an urban landscape. This required a lot of creativity with different shots to isolate those areas that did have a big-city vibe. Lots of research, friends.

In addition to filming this piece, we also built and designed a website for the Redux movement. Take a look-see.
